National Aboriginal Day
Canada's Governor General proclaimed the first National Aboriginal Day in 1996.  In cooperation with Aboriginal organizations, the Canadian government chose June 21st for the day because it was on or near the June Solstice.  Many of Canada's Aboriginal peoples celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day for many generations.

Summer Solstice
Solstice means "sun-stopping".  The point on the horizon where the sun appears to rise and set, stops and reverses direction after this day.  On the solstice, the sun does not rise precisely in the east, but rises to the north of east and sets to the north of west which means the sun is visible longer each day.
